CHAPTER 27

EMERSYN

I was shaking by the time we settled into the back of the car. I wasn’t even aware of it until Rome tucked me closer and rested his head against mine as he covered my hands in my lap.

The temperature in the parking garage, and then in the car, was almost too brisk. But I couldn’t make up my mind if I was cold or hot. Either way, when Rome wrapped me up, I curled into him. The seatbelt kept me from just crawling into his lap, but I tried to steady myself with the even cadence of his heartbeat.

The ride back to the clubhouse carried a wealth of tension in the silence. It wasn’t oppressive, but awareness of Liam’s gaze tracking to mine in the rearview mirror accompanied Rome’s slow stroke against my back. Even with Liam driving, I was wrapped up in the cocoon of both of them.

Back at the warehouse, Rome didn’t exit the car until Liam and Ezra were out, and Kellan was already crossing to us from the clubhouse door to greet us. Rome slid out first, then reached a hand in to me. As soon as I was out, Liam crushed me to him and I returned his fierce grip even as I met Kellan’s worried gaze.

Some of the tension in Kellan seemed to ease as he gave me a once-over. “I’m in one piece,” I promised.

“Even if someone wanted to wave the flag at the bull and challenge him on every level.” Liam’s growl sent a shiver through me as he flattened a hand against my back and kept me in place. Since I was drinking in his nearness, I just settled there. The thump of his heart was as steadying as Rome’s had been.

“Look,” I said, trying to get a grip on my own fluttering emotions. It was so much easier to hold it together when I’d been standing in that office than now. My reactions had been arrested, and now I was shaking everywhere. “You were the one who called me Hellspawn.”

Kellan scrubbed a hand over his face, but exasperation joined his relief as Liam chuckled. “Too late to take it back, huh?”

“Yep,” I said, and when I eased backward, I lifted my gaze to Liam’s worried one. The last thing I wanted to do was scare them. But I was done hiding. “Nothing was happening to me. You guys wouldn’t have allowed it. And I had your backs.”

“You know,” Ezra mused. “I almost miss the timid Emersyn.”

“I don’t,” I told him, perhaps a bit too vehemently, because Liam scowled at Ezra, who immediately raised his hands.

“Right, shutting up. Going to get a beer and check on—well, check on the dead and the not-so-dead…”

Silence blanketed us until he vanished inside the clubhouse doors, and then Kellan stared at me for a beat before lifting his gaze to Liam. “How did it go?”

“Starling verified that King knows who she and Milo are.” Rome shrugged, the ease in his statement put another smile on my face.
